Hip Avascular Necrosis

Hip Avascular Necrosis is when the blood flow to the hip joints and bones decreases causing the hip joint to weaken. This is most often caused by taking Corticosteroid medications like Prednisone or by drinking heavily for long period of time.

Avascular Necrosis Symptoms can cause mild to severe hip pain, hip joint stiffness, decrease hip joint motion, and a grinding feeling when the hip is moved.

There are several very effective Avascular Necrosis Treatment options to help decrease hip pain, increase joint motion, and strengthen the hip joints.

By doing stretching exercises every day before starting your morning routine, you will decrease your hip pain and increase your joint motion. Some stretching exercises you may do are: single knee to chest stretch, hip and glute stretch, and inner thigh stretch.

Another very effective Avascular Necrosis treatment is walking, biking, or swimming. All three of these exercises stretch out the hip muscles, increase blood and oxygen to the hip joints and muscles, and decrease inflammation. But most importantly, these exercises strengthen the hip joints and muscles.

One of the unique and maybe the most frustrating Avascular Necrosis Symptoms is increase in pain and stiffening while resting. Logically, one would think rest would decrease pain and stiffness. However when you have Hip Avascular Necrosis, if you rest too much, your joints and muscles start to inflame and tighten up causing pain. These avascular necrosis symptoms can decrease by doing some simple stretches and taking a short walk. This will increase blood flow and oxygen to the joints and muscles decreasing the inflammation and decreasing the pain and stiffness.

Another natural and easy Avascular Necrosis Treatment is using over the counter pain reliever cream called Arnica. By applying Arnica over the hip muscles, your avascular necrosis symptoms will disappear. Best of all, it is odorless, clear, and dries instantly.

I developed AVN while living in San Francisco and it seems that climate is also a factor and I used to take steriods during childhood and adolescence. Taking calcium lactate improves my legs, living in Singapore and Manila, and now using gym bike to improve more.

I was told I had Bilateral AVN on July 6th. I now have too total hip relacements. I was 38. Never drank, never took any drugs or steroids. Just one of the unlucky ones. AVN hurts like hell. Patience is the key.

"Superboy" if you still use this forum, just a quick message to say: I know how you feel :P I used to be pretty active, used to take simple pleasures like walking and swimming for granted until I got AVN at 11. I'm 18 now and doctors tell me they don't want to operate till I'm middle aged. Yay! But it gets worse before it gets better, right? ~ Soph

I was diagnosed with AVN in 2006 and have not had prolonged use of steroids, drink moderately and have always been active; gymnastics and dance since age 4, dance professionally for 5 years, moved on to fitness industry and ran 4-6 miles a day, now I find myself limited to even maintain a fitness regimen. I stretch everyday and walk approx 1 to 1 1/2 hours a day 5-6 times a week. However, the pain and a permanent limp annoy me most. I don't even realize I'm limping! Does anyone know if I can increase flexibility? I can't seem to bring my knee toward my chest or find myself extremely limited with hip adduction and abduction, I'm afraid if I push beyond the pain to increase flexibility I will hurt myself or break the bone. I'm avoiding hip replacement surgery for as long as possible. Does anyone have any advice for flexibility or to rid myself of this limp? Oh, my specialist/s never did tell me KEEP STRETCHING and the importance of it!!! I was down for 5 weeks with a kidney infection and did not really move around. It was proceeding that time that the limp began and the range of motion became limited!!!

Didnt know what was going on and my Dr. didnt look into it..he just kept telling me i need to lose a little weight..but that wasnt the problem. didnt find out till i switched Dr's. I get shots in my hip every few months but was told that wasnt going to last long. Now 11 years after being diagnosed with it I stay in sever pain all the time an the ball joint is deteriorating an an angle. Now the only way to help is to replace it. I was diagnosed with bilateral AVN earlier this year. One of my drs told me to walk some for exercise, one said not to walk. so not sure what to do. Just been taking it slow.

when I received this news from my ortho dr, I cried right there in the office. I had been treated for 10 mo earlier with Prednisone for a different problem, that is what led to the problem w my hips. Now I need a hip replacement for rt hip, which is in really bad shaped, he says I will need one for the left also, later. I am 45, a mother and grandmother, was very, very active. this has been very life changing for me.

I have lost a lot of ROM, in my right hip. It is hard, but one way I deal with it. Is that I strong belief in God. He has helped me this far, I know he will continue to help me. So whether you believe in God or not, look inside yourself and find something that gives you strength to go on. I have found that my strength comes from my faith in God and the great support from my family. Do I still have sad, depressed days? Yes, I do. but I try to take one day at a time, knowing that the sun will shine tomorrow, and being with my wonderful family, gives me the strength to know that I can make it. think on good things. stay positive. It's not always easy, I know, believe me I do.

I know this article was posted quite some time ago but, hopefully somebody else comes across this and finds it useful.

It sounds to me like a lot of you guys are just giving up. You can't do that. You have to think about your health and your future. You don't want your kids to see you give up in life because of a setback do you?

I've had AVN for a few years now. I know all about the pain that you guys are going thru. I used to think that I could never live a normal life. I snapped out of it and did some research. POOL THERAPY!

There's no pressure on your joints and you're getting an entire body workout. My Range of Motion (ROM) has increased significantly in just a few weeks. My pain is minimal (used to be unbearable). I'm sleeping better. I'm feeling better all around. Give it a try. Just look up aquatic fitness exercises on YouTube and see for yourself.

Once you get stronger, you can start walking more or cycling. You just have to work for it. The reason you're in so much pain is because there is no circulation. You're bone is just dying. Exercise is the only way to feel better.

PS - to those that are afraid of a total hip replacement, have you looked into Core Decompression? Your AVN will never go away but the Core Decompression can prolong a total hip replacement. But, like I said, you'll never get any better just sitting around.

It has been sometime since I wrote my last post. Since then, I have been to physical therapy and I found that to be exceptionally very helpful!!! I learned how I was causing secondary pain, along with using my back to walk and move my leg, therefor causing atrophy in muscles I need for stability and overall strength to function. However, I most importantly learned some things that helped reduce pain and allow me to sleep through the night or allow me to finish grocery shopping and so on. I recommend Physical Therapy highly!!! I can't stress enough how important is it to exercise, low-impact, of course. As well, flexibility is crucial and must be done daily to maintain joint movement. Both my Physical Therapist and Doctor were amazed by my ability, range of motion and flexibility. I was diagnose with AVN in 2006, but I've been in pain since 2000. I have obviously stayed ahead of the game by following my own (and above)advice, even when I had other Doctors tell me to stop exercising. However, I am still in pain but work through it, I feel more pain when I take a day off exercise and veg. The movement from exercise keeps the joint lubricated, which reduces pain. I also had a steroid shot in the hip. I was told it could last up to a year. I felt so much better, however it was short lived. It only lasted 10 days an that was only 2 weeks ago. I have continued to exercise w/pain. My surgeon said I have no other option that a full hip replacement. He agreed with me on the "wait till I can't take it anymore" opinion. Don't know how much more I can take but I'll just take it day to day and keep exercising. I recommend again to seek Phys. Therapy, it has really helped me!!! Good luck to all!

I am 27year old male. I had core decompression surgery for bilateral AVN last month. the surgery gave me pain relief for one month. I started going to office from last week. Unfortunately, the pain is back. hip replacement is the only option (i haven't contacted my surgeon yet again) ? currently i am using pain killer to avoid the pain daily.

am suffering with avn, and have been since last year in lots of pain, even though I do walk daily to increase my mobility, the exercise does alleviate the pain(not at rest ) but the pain still gets worse, thank god for pain relief, as without I would have been wheel chair bound many months ago, have my surgery coming up this summer( if all goes to plan). Even tho pretty scared am totally looking forward to being able to rest without pain, and even be able to run again, Am only 45 so glad am now on list, as thought they were going to try and put me off, make me wait till unbearable, well it is without meds, so Im ready to have it all fixed, good luck everyone

I was diagnosed with AVN three years ago. Since then I have had a core decompression done in September of 2011. Was never alleviated from the pain, it has steadily gotten worse. Due to the core decompression, the dead bone was removed with drill holes. Now the MRI pictures look great but I’m still in horrible pain. The orthopedic doctors don’t want to look further into the pain because the MRI pictures look great. So, if the dead bone is gone why am I still with this increasing pain? Anyone have any advice on what I should do next?

Had a work-related incident in 2009 & was diagnosed this past April with rt hip avn. Even as this excruciating pain is preventing me from enjoying this beautiful day, it feels good to know others can relate. Thanx guys & God Bless.
